If there's one month on the Central Texas lawn care calendar that matters more than all the others, it's September.
Here's why: September is when everything shifts.
The brutal heat starts to relent, the grass wakes back up from summer dormancy, and the conditions for growth and recovery align in a way they haven't since spring.
What you do in September has an outsized impact on how your lawn looks for the rest of the year, and how it comes back next spring.
The Recovery Window Opens
Warm-season grasses like Bermuda and St. Augustine are actively growing again in September as temperatures moderate. After months of just surviving, they're finally in a position to actually thrive. This is the window to give them what they need — nutrients, water, and care — to rebuild density and root strength before the first frost.
Fertilization Hits Different in September
A fertilizer application in early September is absorbed more effectively than anything you could have applied in July or August. The grass is hungry, conditions are right, and nutrients go directly into fueling root development and canopy recovery.
This is one of the most important fertilizer applications of the entire year.
Overseeding and Sod Work Best Done Now
Bare patches and thin areas that struggled through summer can be addressed in September with the best chance of success. New grass seed and sod establish much more easily in warm soil with cooler air temperatures, and fall rainfall takes some of the pressure off irrigation.
Weed Control Timing Is Critical
The pre-emergent window for cool-season weeds opens in September. Apply it now and you'll stop henbit, annual bluegrass, and other cool-season weeds before they germinate. Wait until October and you'll be fighting established weeds all fall instead.
