By August, most Central Texas lawns have been through the wringer. Weeks of 100-degree heat, inconsistent rainfall, possible pest pressure, and months of fighting to stay alive have left even healthy lawns looking worn out.

But here's the good news! Fall is just around the corner, and fall also happens to be recovery season.

Here's your three-step plan to bring your lawn back to beautiful.

Step 1: Assess the Damage

Before you do anything, take an honest look at what you're working with. Walk the yard and note which areas are dormant versus which appear truly dead.

Do the tug test on brown patches. If the grass pulls out easily with no resistance, those roots are gone.

Map out your bare or dead spots so you know what will need reseeding or sodding in fall.

Understanding the extent of the damage tells you how aggressive your recovery plan needs to be.

Step 2: Keep It Alive Through August

Recovery doesn't start until fall, but your job in August is to keep the lawn alive and stop the damage from getting worse.

✔️Water deeply two to three times a week in the early morning.

✔️Keep mowing, but raise your deck height and never remove more than one-third of the blade.

✔️Hold off on fertilizer.

✔️Remove weeds that are competing with your stressed grass for water and nutrients.

This is triage mode, not restoration mode.

Step 3: Execute Your Fall Recovery

Once temperatures drop consistently into the 80s, typically mid to late September in the Copperas Cove area, it's time to act.

Apply a balanced fertilizer to feed the recovering turf.

Overseed thin areas or lay sod in dead patches while conditions are ideal for establishment.

Apply a fall pre-emergent to head off cool-season weeds before they germinate.

Keep up with watering until fall rains take over.

By October, you'll start seeing the results of your effort.
