Leaf Cleanup: Why Letting Leaves Sit Is Silently Killing Your Lawn

It seems harmless enough, right? A thin layer of fallen leaves covering your lawn in October and November. Some people even think it acts as a natural mulch.

But what if I told you that letting leaves sit on your grass is one of the most damaging things you can do to your lawn in fall? Because it is.

Now, let's talk about why.

Leaves Block Sunlight

Grass needs sunlight to produce energy, even in fall when growth has slowed. A thick layer of leaves acts like a blanket, cutting off light to the grass below.

The longer it sits, the more the grass underneath weakens and struggles, and the harder it will be to bounce back in spring.

They Trap Moisture...But Not in the Good Way

Wet leaves sitting on grass create a damp, stagnant environment that's perfect for fungal disease. Unlike mulch in a flower bed, wet leaves on a lawn don't break down fast enough to be beneficial, so they just create problems.

Brown patch and other fungal issues can develop surprisingly quickly under a thick leaf layer.

They Compact and Mat Down

As leaves get rained on and walked on, they mat together and compact. A matted layer of leaves is much harder to deal with than fresh fallen ones, and the damage to the grass underneath builds the longer it sits.

The best approach is to stay ahead of it by cleaning up regularly rather than letting it pile up.

Ok, But Now What Do You Do With the Leaves?

Mowing over light leaf coverage and mulching them into fine pieces is actually beneficial, as it returns organic matter to the soil. But for heavier coverage, removal is the right call. Bagged leaves can go to a compost pile or be disposed of with yard waste collection.

Either way, get them off of the lawn!
