Most homeowners in Central Texas know they need to water their lawn. What most don't know is that they're probably doing it wrong — and that could be doing more harm than good. Here are the most common watering mistakes and how to fix them.
Mistake #1: Watering Every Day
Daily light watering is one of the most common lawn mistakes in Texas. It keeps the top inch of soil wet while doing almost nothing for the root zone.
Over time, your grass becomes dependent on surface moisture and its roots stay shallow — making it much more vulnerable to drought. Water deeply two to three times a week instead.
Mistake #2: Watering in the Evening
Evening watering leaves your lawn wet all night. That extended moisture is a perfect breeding ground for lawn fungus and disease, which are already a problem in our humid summer air.
Switch to early morning and your lawn will thank you!
Mistake #3: Ignoring Your Soil Type
Central Texas is known for its heavy clay soils, especially in the Copperas Cove area. Clay absorbs water slowly, so if you're running your sprinklers too fast, the water is running off before it soaks in.
Try watering in shorter cycles with breaks in between — called cycle and soak — to give the water time to penetrate.
Mistake #4: Not Adjusting for Rain
Running your sprinkler system on a fixed schedule regardless of rainfall is wasteful and hard on your lawn. After a good rain, your lawn doesn't need irrigation for several days.
Most modern irrigation systems have rain sensors or smart controllers that handle this automatically. If yours doesn't, make it a habit to check and adjust manually.
The Right Way to Water
Water in the early morning, deeply and infrequently, and adjust based on rainfall and temperature. It sounds simple, but getting it right makes a huge difference in the health and appearance of your lawn.
